Smells Like Coffee

Beberapa hari yang lalu gue, S, Q dan Ondy main-main ke Outline - Indonesia Drawing Festival. Ada pameran ilustrasi dengan beragam media, workshop dan diskusi yang terbuka untuk umum di sana. 

Ini bukan kali pertama Qavi gue ajak ke pameran seni. Dari bayi Q sering kita bawa ke beberapa acara bazaar ataupun pameran seni, craft, sampe otomotif. Jadi dia udah cukup terbiasa dengan suasana di tempat-tempat itu. Bedanya, sekarang ini si bocah lagi demen lari sana sini, jadi pe er gue adalah kudu pasang mata elang dan hati-hati sama tingkah lakunya selama di dalam pameran. 

Tapi so far so good. Selain teriak-teriak manggil gue atau momonya dan lari sana-sini, nothing to worry about. Untung juga lagi nggak terlalu rame tempatnya, jadi gue nggak khawatir dia nabrak-nabrak orang lalu orangnya bete dan ngasemin gue.

Lepas dari makan atau nggak makan, belakangan gue jadi lebih mendalami festival ini karena ada issue yang lagi marak tersebar di beberapa media sosial. Bahkan media internasional merilis artikel-artikel terkait masalah ini. Sampai terakhir gue search beberapa jam yang lalu, sudah ada sekitar 976.000-an foto dengan hastag #StopYulin2015 yang tersebar di Instagram saja. Gue sendiri jadi tertarik sama issue ini gegara liat postingan temen gue di Instagram. 

Now let's get to the issue. Yulin festival ini diadakan sebagai penanda awal musim panas. Kenapa harus makan anjing? Simply because Chinese people believe that eating dog meat brings good luck and health. Menurut kepercayaan mereka, makan daging anjing itu membawa keberuntungan dan baik untuk kesehatan. Tradisi ini sebenarnya sudah berlangsung bertahun-tahun, terus kenapa sekarang hebohnya??

Makan anjing memang legal di China, tapi yang jadi masalah adalah, saat menjelang dan selama Yulin festival, para anjing dan kucing (yes, they do cats too!) ini diperlakukan secara nggak layak. Beberapa orang bahkan mencuri anjing dan kucing peliharaan untuk kemudian dijual ke rumah-rumah jagal. :'(

Selama perjalanan dan di slaughterhouse ini mereka juga nggak diperlakukan secara layak, nggak dikasih makan, dilempar sana-sini, kadang diracun atau diberi obat, dan parahnya lagi, mereka harus melihat teman-teman anjing dan kucingnya dibunuh di depan matanya! OMG it really breaks my heart..

Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project bikin petisi untuk dikirim ke pemerintah YuLin. Isinya adalah permohonan agar pemerintah YuLin mau membatalkan festival ini. Mereka mengutarakan lima alasan untuk pembatalan Yulin festival yang akan berlangsung tanggal 22 Juni 2015 ini.

And finally got this Elle Indonesia April edition. I've been searching it for a few days, and finally got it at BBC bookstore, and this was the last one that they had! Well, I think I'm gonna need more time to read all of the 1000+ pages..

Here in Indonesia, bicycle (in general) is a very cheap vehicle that majority people could have. That's why, if you ever live or just travel to any city or even village in Indonesia, you will most likely find someone using it on the street. Some of them ride it because they care about the environment, other people ride it because it's trending, and a lot of people ride it for their life. They work with it. And for them, their bicycle is everything..

That first man is a tailor, we call them "Tukang Jahit Keliling". He ride around one or two housing to get some customers, bringing a table with a sewing machine inside. 

Remember a man that ride with a huge bunch of grass behind his bike on my post here? Now this is the illustration of it. These kind of man usually bring grass or straw to feed their cows or lambs. 

And this is "Tukang Siomay", a man that sells various of dumplings. Carrying a little stove in the right box to keep the dumplings hot, plates and forks in the other box and also a bucket of water to wash used plates, and some sauces on the back. Can you imagine how heavy it is..??

Well, that is only 3 of so many people in Indonesia that use bicycle to hang on their life. What a hard worker..

Just a quick post on the midnight..

I missed the whole Indonesian Fashion Week 2012, huhuuuu.. :(  My friend Audry was there, took care her company stand (she is a fashion illustrator by the way). I guess I could only hear it from her the next time we meet and seeing some post from the fashion bloggers. Unfortunately I couldn't go there because me and Sats have to maintain our new ID, and it really take times to be done.. (-_-)

It's been a long time and I kinda missed my soft pastel, so last week I took a day off (well, sort of, hehee..) and came up with this illustration using a pink soft pastel and a black marker. I love combining pink and black so it wouldn't be too girly.. :P

Anyway, it's been rainy all day today and Sats has fell asleep already and I have to catch up because the morning will come soon so good nite..!! (^^)

Hi there everyone..!! Happy New Year and Happy Lunar Year..!!

I am very sorry for the lack of the post lately. I have been busy with so many things including dealing with the bad flu thingy.. For those who are riding in Indonesia or some other country with a not-so-friendly weather, please do take care of your health, and wear a warm clothes during rainy days. ;)

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar... and it's story...

당신의 삶에서 할 일이 너무 많아졌을 때, 하루 24시간이 모자라다고 느낄 때, 마요네즈 병 이야기를 떠올려 보아라.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

한 교수가 그의 철학 수업 시작 전에 앞에 서 있었고 그의 앞에는 몇 가지 물건이 있었다.

When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

수업이 시작되었을 때 말없이 그는 매우 큰 빈 마요네즈 병을 들어올렸고 그 안을 골프공으로 채우기 시작했다.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

그리고 그는 그의 학생들에게 이 병이 꽉 차있는지 물었다. 학생들은 그렇다고 대답했다.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.

그러자 그 교수는 조약돌 한 상자를 들어 그 병 안에 쏟았다. 교수는 가볍게 그 병을 흔들었다.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

조약돌은 골프공 사이의 공간으로 굴러 들어 갔다.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

그리고 그는 다시 학생들에게 이 병이 가득 차있는지 물었다. 학생들은 그렇다고 대답했다.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

그 교수는 다음으로 모래 한 상자를 들어 그 병 안에 쏟아 부었다.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

역시 모래는 빈 공간을 채웠다.

He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an emphatic "yes."

그는 다시 한 번 이 병이 가득 차 있는지 물었다. 학생들은 단호하게 "네"라고 대답했다.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

그러자 교수는 교탁 아래에서 두 잔의 커피를 꺼내 그 내용물을 병 안에 모두 쏟아 넣었고, 커피는 모래 사이의 빈 공간을 효과적으로 채웠다.

The students laughed.

학생들은 웃기 시작했다.

“Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided,

"이제," 웃음이 가라앉자 교수가 말했다.

"I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things.
Your family, your children, your faith, your health, your friends, and your favourite passions.
Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter. Your job, your house, and your car.
The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”

"나는 자네들이 이 병이 자네들의 인생임을 알았으면 하네. 골프 공은 매우 중요한 것들이야.
자네들의 가족, 자녀, 자네들의 믿음, 건강, 친구 그리고 자네들이 가장 좋아하는 열정 말이네.
자네들 인생에서 다른 것들이 모두 사라지고 이것들만 남는다해도, 그 인생은 여전히 꽉 차있을 거야.
조약돌은 문제가 되는 다른 것들이네. 자네들의 직업, 집 그리고 차 같은 것들이지.
모래는 그 외 모든 것들이지. 작은 것들 말이야."

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued,

"만약 자네들이 모래를 병 속에 가장 먼저 넣는다면," 그는 계속해서 말했다.

"there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Go Fishing, Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand."

"그렇다면 조약돌이나 골프공이 들어갈 자리는 없을거네. 인생도 이와 같네.
자네들이 자네들의 시간과 힘을 그 작은 것들을 위해 써버리면, 평생 자네들에게 중요한 것이 들어갈 공간이 없을게야.
자네들의 행복을 결정짓는 것에 집중하게. 아이들과 시간을 보내게. 낚시를 가도 좋고, 건강검진을 위한 시간도 갖게.
배우자와 함께 저녁을 먹으러 나가게. 다른 (골프)경기를 하게. 언제나 집을 치우고 고장난 것을 고칠 시간은 있을거네.
가장 중요한 골프공을 먼저 생각하게. 삶의 우선순위를 정하게.
그리고 남은 것들은 그냥 모래일 뿐이네."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.
The professor smiled.

학생 중 한 명이 손을 들고 커피는 무엇을 의미하는지 물었다.
교수는 미소를 지었다.

"I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

"물어봐줘서 고맙네. 이건 단지 자네들의 인생이 얼마나 가득찼든지 간에, 언제나 친구와 커피 한 잔 할 여유는 있다는 것을 보여주네."
